Question
EIC ISSUE

Answer

The most common EIC error is when the SSN entered for EIC (dependent) does not match the year of birth and/or name from the IRS records. The IRS uses the first four letters of the last name to verify the SSN. Your dependent's name and SSN must be entered exactly as it appears on their social security card.  Please check how you have entered this information into the program and the childs date of birth closely to resolve this error.

How to correct this error:

From our homepage, click on sign in. Enter the user name and password created when you started your return and the scrambled code at the bottom of the screen. Once logged in select to go to the correct tax year.  Review the rejection and continue in the software to make your correction.

Choose "continue from beginning.  In the "my info" section, click on dependent information, then edit at the dependent name to make the needed correction. Please note that if the dependent SSN is NOT entered correctly, you will need to "delete" the dependent and then select to "add a new dependent" so that the SSN can be entered correctly.

If you have entered your dependent's name and SSN correctly you will need to contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 as they are the record keepers for the IRS. You will need to find out what data they have on file for your dependent and will have to use this data in order to e-file. Please consider that if the year of birth is significantly incorrect you will need to paperfile as this could affect credits, etc.

Once you have made your correction you will then save and continue to the end of your return and resubmit.

*We strongly recommend checking the status of your return in 24-48 hours using the Login to My Income Tax Return link to verify that your return has been accepted.
