Question
North Carolina Estimated Tax Payments

Answer

If the total tax shown due on your 2021 N.C. tax return minus tax credits and the amount paid through North Carolina income tax withholding is $1,000 or more, you may owe interest on the underpayment of estimated tax. To see if you owe interest, you should complete Form D-422, Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals. Form D-422 is available on the Department’s website. Interest is not due if each payment equals 25 percent (25%) of the lesser of 90 percent (90%) (66 2/3 percent (66 2/3%) for farmers and fishermen) of the tax due on your current year’s return or 100 percent (100%) of the tax due on your previous year’s return.
