Question
What is the history of the United Services Military Apprenticeship Program?

Answer

The program was established March 1976 by written agreement between the Secretary of Labor and the Secretary of the Navy. The program was used extensively by Sailors and was known as the Navy's National Apprenticeship Program (NNAP). On August 20, 1999, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed by Headquarters of the U.S Marine Corps, to consolidate the Marine Corps National Apprenticeship Program and the NNAP, thus forming the United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP). On April 7, 2000, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed by the Director of Training of the U.S. Coast Guard, thus adding the Coast Guard to the USMAP. The USMAP currently has 124 occupations registered. The Navy takes pride in being the Department of Labor's largest apprenticeship sponsor, with 85,648 active apprentices.
