Question
Can I e-file my Rhode Island state return without e-filing my federal return?

Answer

General Information

If you are filing a Rhode Island resident return and have internet access, you may qualify to file your Federal and RI personal income tax return for free via the internet.

These are private companies providing this service for Rhode Island's taxpayers. They are not contractually associated with the Rhode Island Division of Taxation. Please read the information on their web sites carefully before you begin the filing process. You may be charged a fee for filing your taxes electronically if you do not meet the qualifications for Free File.

Be aware of two points going to these sites:

  1. You must file both your federal and state return for the system to work. If you have already filed your federal return using another electronic filing service, you will not be able to file your state return electronically.

  2. There may be a charge to file your taxes electronically if you do not meet the qualifications
