Question
Form 4868 Extensions

Answer

Filing an extension with WEB Software

To file an extension, start a new return and fill out the Primary Information section. Once this section is complete, you will be prompted to file an extension. Once you check "yes", click save and continue and your extension will automatically be e-filed. This extension will give you until October 15 to e-file your tax return.

Filing an extension with Desktop Software:

Create the new return, select Form 4868 from the first input page. Fill out the personal information for the return and Form 4868 inputs. Close out of the return and select the link from the Client Manager to transmit extension.

Extension Rules

Extensions must be filed by April 15th.

An extension is a request for additional time to file, not additional time to pay. If you are going to owe taxes, you have to mail in your payment by April 15 to avoid penalty.

If you are due a refund, it is not necessary to file an extension. There is no penalty for late filing unless you owe the IRS. An extension allows you to file your tax return by October 15th.

If you electronically file your return on April 15 and the IRS sends it back for corrections, you have until April 20 to retransmit your return and be accepted by the IRS.
