Question
I have a problem with my education credits.

Answer

If your error indicates that the name and SSN for the qualifying person on form 8863 (Education Credits - Hope/Lifetime Learning Credits) do not match the IRS records. Please first verify the information you entered for the education credit to ensure it was entered correctly, as that is a very common cause of this error.

Please note, the IRS identifies an individual with three pieces of data - SSN, DOB and first four letters of the last name. If even one of these items does not match the IRS will not accept the return.

How to correct this error:

From our homepage, click on sign in to log in to your account.  Select the current return that is rejected.

Go to the "My Info" tab.  Verify that the name, SSN, and date of birth are correct.  (If the SSN for a dependent is entered incorrectly, please select to delete the dependent and select to add a new dependent to enter the information correctly)

Next, select the Credits tab on the left margin of the page, scroll down to the Education Credit where you will revisit and edit your entry to make the correction. Please note that on our site you are required to remove the SSN completely and then re-enter it to make the correction.

If you have entered your dependent's name and SSN correctly you will need to contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 as they are the record keepers for the IRS. You will need to find out what data they have on file for your dependent and will have to use this data in order to e-file.

Once you have made your correction you will then save and continue to the end of your return and resubmit.

*We strongly recommend checking the status of your return in 24-48 hours using the Login to My Income Tax Return link to verify that your return has been accepted.
