Question
One of my dependents has already been claimed.

Answer

If your error indicates that one of your dependents has already been claimed on another tax return, you will first want to log in and verify all the information you entered for the dependent,  as that is a very common cause of this error.  If the last name and social are not mistyped then you will need to print and mail your return to claim this dependent or you can remove the dependent and resend the return.  You will not be able to efile a return with this dependent listed.

How to correct this error:

From our homepage, click on sign in to log into your acount.  Select the current return that is rejected.

Next, go to the "My Info" tab and revisit the Dependents where you will  choose to Edit the dependent in question. If you did not intend to claim this individual as a dependent simply answer 'No' to the question - "Do you want to claim this person as a dependent?"

If the SSN was entered incorrectly, you must DELETE the dependent and then re-enter them completely to make the correction on our site.

If the SSN was in fact entered correctly and no one should have claimed this dependent you will be required to paper file this year to dispute the claim with the IRS. You will do this by clicking on the Completed Tax Summary tab on the left side of the page and then save and continue to the View/Print tax returns  screen to print and mail your forms. Please note that you must include all tax reporting documents, W-2's, 1099's, etc, when paper filing.

Once you have made your correction you will then save and continue to the end of your return and resubmit.

*We strongly recommend checking the status of your return in 24-48 hours using the Login to My Income Tax Return link to verify that your return has been accepted.
