Question
What is error code 510 in sequence 10 or sequence 30?

Answer

Error code 0510 in sequence 10 or 30 indicates that someone else has claimed the primary or secondary SSN on an accepted tax return. There are two common causes of this error: 1) you have incorrectly entered a SSN on your return or 2) a parent has claimed the primary or secondary taxpayer as a dependent.  Please first verify the information you entered for this individual to ensure it was entered correctly, as that is a very common cause of this error.

How to correct this error:

From our homepage, click on sign in to access your account.  Select the current return that is rejected.

Next, select the "My Info" tab. If you or your spouse can be claimed as a dependent on a parent's return you will need to answer No to the appropriate Exemption question. Whoever provided more than half of the care and keeping of this individual has the right to the exemption. (Exemptions are suspended starting in 2018)

If the SSN was entered incorrectly, you must remove the entire number and then re-enter it to make the correction on our site.

If no one else could have claimed you on a return please first verify your entries are correct. If your entries were correct you will be required to paper file this tax season to dispute the exemption with the IRS. You will do this by clicking on the Tax Summary tab on the top of the page and then save and continue to the forms screen to print and mail your forms.  Please note that you must include all income reporting documents, W-2's, 1099's, etc, when paper filing.

Once you have made your correction you will then save and continue to the end of your return and resubmit.

*We strongly recommend checking the status of your return in 24-48 hours using the Login to My Income Tax Return link to verify that your return has been accepted.
