Answer

Z-Axis Belt Replacement in the Epilog Mini

Machine Types:      Epilog Mini 18/24

Tools Needed:

  • Philips head screw driver
  • 5/16 Nut Driver
  • 3/32 Hex Wrench
  • Wire Cutters
  • Sharpie Marker

Intro:

This procedure details steps to replacing the Z-belt. The Z-belt controls the vertical movement of the engraving table. Before starting on this procedure, raise the engraving table to the top position and disconnect the power cord from the machine.

Procedure:

  1. Remove both side panels.

  2. Remove the front service panel.

  3. Remove the Z-motor:
    a.  Disconnect the motor lead.

    b.  Disconnect the white ribbon cable connected to the control board.

    c.  A 3/32 hexagonal screw controls the tightness of the belt. The belt needs to be at certain tightness in order for the motor to work properly. Therefore, before removing the bracket, obtain a Sharpie marker, and color the visible thread between the bracket and the fixed nut. Be sure to color the edge of the thread and the fixed nut.

    d.  With a long 5/16 nut driver, unscrew the two nuts on the motor bracket.

    e.  Unscrew the 3/32 hexagonal screw.
  4. Remove the left side of the belt:
    a.  Put the belt on its flat edge and slip under the Drive pulley.

  5. Remove the right side of the belt:
    a.  Put the belt on its flat edge and slip under the Drive Pulley.

  6. Install the belt by following the diagram below. It is easiest to put the belt on the left drive pulley then loop the belt around the right drive pulley.

    a.  Getting the Z-belt around the motor pulley is a little tricky.

       i.  Pull the silver spindle down a quarter of an inch (6.35mm).
ii. Put the new motor and bracket into the machine at an angle.
iii. Slip the belt around the spindle. Make sure the belt is squarely on the spindle.
    b.  Position the motor bracket on the fixed screws.
    c.  Place the nuts on the fixed screws.  Do not tighten the nuts.

    d.  Tighten the hexagonal tensioning screw until the edge of the sharpie mark is at the edge of the fixed nut. Getting the precise placement of the sharpie mark is very important. The mark should be in the exact same spot as it was before the screw was taken out.

    e.  Tighten the two nuts holding the motor bracket.

    f.  Loosen the left nut a quarter of a turn.

    g.  Reconnect the motor lead.

    h.  Reconnect the white ribbon cable to the control board.

  7. Replace the front service panel.
  8. Replace the side panels.
