Question
Explain the IL PIN

Answer

To e-file an Illinois tax return, you (and/or spouse) must have:

  • Filed an Illinois tax return within the past two years, or
  • A valid Illinois Driver's License or State ID

If you (and/or spouse) have not file an Illinois tax return within the past two years and you (and/or spouse) do not have a valid Illinois driver's license or Illinois State ID, you must paper file your Illinois return. However, you (and/or spouse) should be assigned an IL-PIN to e-file next year.

Note : If your return is rejected with Reject Code IL1040-8000-2, IL1040-8000-2, IL1040-10500-3 or IL1040-9900-2, the signature alternative for the taxpayer (and/or spouse) does not match the IDOR Records.  Your (and/or spouse’s) signature alternative options depends on whether or not you have filed an Illinois tax return within the past two years.
