Question
I did not receive a 1098 but I have mortgage interest. How do I claim it?

Answer

We will fill in the appropriate information for you based on the data you provide during the interview.  On the deductions page, go to the "interest you paid", you will be asked to report the amount not reported on the form 1098.

Home mortgage interest that was not reported to you on Form 1098 will be deducted on line 8b of Schedule A (Form 1040). If you paid home mortgage interest to the person from whom you bought your home, show that person's name, address, and social security number (SSN) or employer identification number (EIN) on the dotted lines next to line 11. The seller must give you this number and you must give the seller your SSN. Form W-9/Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification can be used for this purpose. Failure to meet any of these requirements may result in a $50 penalty for each failure.

If you can take a deduction for points that were not reported to you on Form 1098, those points will be deducted on line 8c of Schedule A (Form 1040).

This is an itemized deduction entry, if you choose the standard deduction for the return, the value/entry form mortgage interest in not included in the calculation of the return.
